preparation software product affects the user’s assessment of the product.

But more importantly, TurboTax provides a list of items required to complete your tax return accurately. Tax season is just around the corner, which means you should be gearing up to file. A great way to make sure you’re filing correctly and getting the maximum refund is by upgrading your tax software.

We contacted customer service departments by phone to assess their hold time and customer service quality. Tax software is a digital product that allows you to file both your federal and state tax returns with guided help. Depending on the tax software you choose, you can find features such as direct import of tax forms, tax deduction locators, expert tax help and customer service support. Self-employed freelance workers generally have more complicated income tax filings than employees. Ensuring that online tax software caters to the special needs of freelancers and self-employed individuals is essential at tax time. We evaluated each platform’s offering in this category for pricing, support, state filing fees, deduction finder options and total costs.

As you prepare your tax return, TurboTax Deluxe offers many helpful tools, such as explainer videos, questionnaires to help you identify tax deductions and credits, and explanations for why you might owe taxes. We found this very useful for someone who feels mostly confident filing their taxes but wants some reassurance they’re doing it right. Users living in Arizona, California, Massachusetts and New York will be directed to a state-support tax filing tool to prepare their state returns. Ease of use, cost, technical assistance and customer service are four broad areas to look at when choosing the best platform for you. The IRS is also offering live chat support — with an option for a follow-up phone call — to people who need help using Direct File.

nearly identical percentage of respondents to last year, 82% (down
one percentage point), reported needing technical support from their
software’s manufacturer (see Exhibit 5). ProSeries
and Lacerte won the most regard for this (44.7% and 43.6%,
respectively). Respondents who had control over the software
selection process tended to regard their software as easier to use
than those who did not. Users who had made the software purchasing
decision (all brands) gave it an average 4.3 out of 5 for ease of
use, while those with no involvement in the choice gave it an
average 3.7.

You can narrow them down to a manageable number by setting standards. Check out the features and capabilities of the software, and figure out which ones your situation calls for. Otherwise there’s a risk you might end up paying for lots of options you don’t need.

data, however, did not indicate what forms users of any particular
product needed. The

particular size and scope, although some products were used across a
wide range of firm sizes. Lacerte, for example, showed up mostly in
firms of between two and 20 preparers, although it ranked relatively
high for one-person shops, which made up 20% of respondents using
it.
